Readers are conversant with the device of the Main-Character Angle, in which the story is told as seen through the mind and eyes of the main character, but in the third person, and usually in historical present. The device was transferred from the world of literature to that of the silver screen in this film, the camera representing the eyes of Marlowe, Chandler’s Private Eye.
